Delaware receives NPS/SORP Top SCORP Planning Award for 2015 !

Congratulations to Delaware  SLO Bivens, ASLO Moerschel and the staff of Delaware State Parks for this great recognition..

The Society of Outdoor Recreation Professionals (SORP)  and the National Park Service (NPS) have selected Delaware for the 2015 State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP) Excellence Award.  Each year the SORP Board of Directors and NPS presents this prestigious award to a state or territory whose SCORP clearly embraces the spirit of outdoor recreation planning – specifically the requirements of the Land & Water Conservation Fund Act.

Sergio Capozzi, SORP President, and Martha Droge, NPS, outlined several key factors around which Delaware’s SCORP is a stand out:

  • development of the level of service modeling tool designed determine both gaps in local park service and the best locations to invest in outdoor recreation that reach both underserved and best served communities.
  • flexibility of the model – it can dynamically forecast public recreation needs in the context of changing conditions over a long planning horizon. The Plan looks at “walkshed” and “driveshed” to reveal population proximity to close to home park resources.
  • the plan addresses aging and replacement of outdoor recreation facilities
  • participation in plan development was inclusive
  • plan is goal oriented
  • overall the plan is clear, concise and easy to read and understand
