2016 NASORLO Annual Meeting Resolutions, Materials and Information

Welcome to Detroit and welcome from NASORLO and the Michigan Department of Natural Resource who are your hosts for the 2016 NASORLO Annual Meeting.  The host hotel is the Downtown Courtyard Marriott and the program will be an important one as we look at efforts to improve Outdoor Recreation and Parks in Urban settings, look at ways to provide more opportunities for under served populations and discuss important LWCF grant changes and policy.  With increasing LWCF funding for both state and urban outdoor recreation areas and a need to make our grants program more effective and efficient, this will be a valuable meeting that you do not want to mi

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is very excited to host the 2016 annual meeting of the National Association of State Outdoor Recreation Liaison Officers (NASORLO) in Detroit!   We have picked a great location for the conference at the Courtyard Marriott in Downtown Detroit which is located near the riverfront and close to many exciting attractions.   Urban recreation has lead the comeback of Detroit and you will be see this happening in real time!

Working with NASORLO Board members, we have developed a meeting agenda that will bring you up-to-date with the many critical issues facing administrators of the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF).  It is also a great opportunity to share your experiences and learn from your cohorts who are addressing many of the same issues you are related to the administration of the LWCF.  Also, don’t miss this opportunity to have both formal and informal discussions with the National Park Service (NPS) employees who administer the program.

We are also very excited to take you on a tour of LWCF grant-assisted sites in Detroit and to spend time exploring the renovation and revival of Detroit starting with recreation along the Detroit Riverfront.  We will also spend time at the DNR’s Outdoor Adventure Center and exploring and having a barbeque on the historic Belle Isle, Michigan’s newest State Park.

We have been able to procure a very affordable rate of $115 per night at the hotel for the meeting dates and you can register by telephone at (800)321-2211 or on-line at: Book your group rate for National Association of State Outdoor Recreation Liaison Officers Annual Conference   If you plan to come in early or stay for the weekend, please note the following.  [ You can  also take advantage of your time in Detroit and get the conference rate of $115 per night two days prior and two days after the conference as long as rooms are available.  You need to call Joy Donahue, Marriott Event Coordinator, 313-223-3915 to get the conference rate !! ]

Please note participants need to make their reservations by Tuesday, August 30, 2016 in order to receive your group’s special rate.

We are very proud of how the LWCF and our other recreation grant funding programs have assisted in the comeback of Detroit.  As you will see, it has all started with creating recreation opportunities along or near the Detroit River and we are extremely excited to share Detroit with you.  See you in September and please call me if you have any questions!

Sites Visited and Tour Options in Detroit.. We will also visit a one of a kind urban outdoor recreation center intended to  bring outdoor recreation skills and education to downtown Detroit..  Located on Detroit’s riverfront in the historic Globe Building, with the Dequindre Cut Trail running through its backyard, the Outdoor Adventure Center (OAC) gives you a taste of Michigan’s great outdoors in the heart of the city.

Experience exciting outdoor adventures with hands-on activities, exhibits and simulators — walk behind and touch a waterfall, step into a fishing boat and reel in a big fish, hit the trail on a mountain bike or snowmobile, and much more. At the OAC, you’ll learn about how the DNR manages state parks, forests, wildlife and fish as you climb the roots and explore the canopy of a massive bur oak tree, hop aboard a real airplane, and see what’s swimming in our aquarium.
